This day of course was significant as it was my Father’s 75th birthday, and it was also the day we spent visiting the Toyota plant and training centre, located on the same campus.
The most impressive part of the visit is pretty hard to pick but we were able to study a number of interesting things during around three hours on site.
Personally, having visited around seven, I would say the visit to the training centre was one of the highlights, it is a little unusual to gain access to these centres, but apparently through our good local relationships, and the fact that this plant was quite distant from Toyota City, they were very accommodating.
We entered the training facility, after hearing it had been upgraded and enlarged after a series of Kaizen events had created space. It is important to note that this plant, was in fact two plants on one campus, with two sets of discreet product families, and best of all was that this plant was 80% Lexus! On arrival in the training centre we spent a few minutes in the entrance hall and met a couple of the on duty instructors who would guide us on our tour. This was a working training centre and they took time to show us the classes that were currently running, which included a group on induction, that were there for 8 days. Yes, 8 days on their induction! Toyota operates a system whereby they have employee intakes at age 18 and 22 after high school or university. It is important to note that there is not management or graduate fast track in TMC, everyone starts at Gemba and goes through the same training.
We were then shepherded through to a gallery area where they were recognising the status of the trainees and recent awards, plus their mission and values statement. The tour guide then showed us a diagram, which had a summary of your skills and career progression that you could expect as a Toyota employee. This was quite fascinating, the scale across the bottom was the years of service, and it stretched from 1 to 42 years! So all employees are “Human Treasures and should be treated and respected as such. This to me was a fundamental statement of Toyota’s values, I have often seen the tag line, we built people first and then we build cars, and they really mean it.
One of our questions were around the ratio of full time trainers to employees, I guess in the west we would be thinking how many people are in the training team. This confused the Toyota guys and we didn’t get a clear answer, Geno our tour guide later explained that the role of trainer is one of those skills, and approximately 20% of the employee base of 7,000 was certified as trainers. The system is that you would be rostered on as a trainer as and when required, and this was not a full time position.
This is a very interesting approach and on reflection would ensure training was up to date, there would be the latest standard work taught and of course a real Gemba authenticity coming from the one giving the training.
This is a deep and meaningful fact to me and one that is fundamentally simple and brilliant at the same time.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
