5S

Well this is probably the easiest one of all…5S

5S is a continuous Improvement system that supports the creation and on going development of creating high levels of workplace organization.

I consulted Masaaki Imai on the origins of 5S and his version is that Toyota learned of the Henry Ford CANDO model combined with an existing Japanese expression used with school children.
The words Seiri, Seiton when referred to children, is sort yourself and get organised…does that sound familiar from you schooldays??? I think so!

The 5s method that uses a list of five Japanese words: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke. Transliterated or translated into English, they all start with the letter “S”. The list describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order. The decision-making process usually comes from a dialogue about standardization, which builds understanding among employees of how they should do their work.
